Petite Models

How to Become a Petite Model

When we think of models we usually think of tall, lanky supermodels strutting down the runway. But, there is a great petite modeling market that can offer many opportunities for smaller or petite models. Did I say “smaller”? Yep, I did. We really don’t use the term “petite” inside the real modeling industry.

Top agents and bookers usually refer to a petite model as “small”, and we never say “short”. Not sure why major agencies refer to these models as small rather than petite, or call themselves commercial modeling agencies rather than petite modeling agencies, but it’s always been that way ever since I became an agent 35 years ago. That being said, for this article, I will refer to them as petite models.

What Are Petite Models?

Female petite models are generally under 5′ 7″ and under and can even be successful at 5′ 4″ or less. Check out our petite model Evelyn below who, at 5′ 4″ we signed to Elite Models.

Opportunities for Petite Models

Petite models are usually sought after for particular types of modeling jobs such as, swimsuit modeling, lingerie, hand, feet and parts modeling, and other jobs that don’t require the height of a runway model. They can also find jobs as fit and showroom models working with garment manufacturers and suppliers.

There are other opportunities such as commercial modeling. Commercial models come in all heights, shapes and sizes so there are tremendous opportunities for smaller models in the commercial market. Commercial models are seen everywhere in print and television ads for cereals and food products, soaps and bath products, furniture and car ads, and the like. The list is endless. Anything that isn’t high fashion a commercial model can do.

If you are an aspiring commercial or petite model one of the very best resources is the book “How to Become a Successful Commercial Model” by Aaron Marcus Aaron shares his expertise of more than 25 years in the modeling and acting industry to help new models succeed in the business.
